The IAG Graduate Program provides recent university graduates with the opportunity to work across multiple business areas, and experience different projects, courses, teams and ways of working.
Beginning in February each year, the 18-month Program encourages participants to explore their potential with us, develop new skills and have experiences that will see them reach new heights.
Participants are given a structured induction and ongoing development program, a mentor and buddy for support throughout the experience and importantly, the security of being a fulltime IAG employee from day one.
Fox Crowley and Jennifer Ting, participants in the 2022 Actuarial Graduate Program, share some insights about their experience so far.
Meet Fox Crowley
What is your university background?
Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Actuarial Studies at the University of Melbourne. I’m also currently completing a Master of Data Science.
What areas have you gained experience in during your grad rotation so far?
As an actuarial grad I have primarily been working in the Reserving branch. Through the role I’ve had lots of exposure to new things like corporate reporting, data problem solving, coding and analysis tasks which I’ve really enjoyed. I’ve also been given the opportunity to communicate with various stakeholders on what I’ve been working on and show the knowledge I’ve developed since the start of the program.
How would you describe your experience so far?
Extremely positive! Initially it was daunting, but I’ve found everyone super supportive and I’ve come to learn a whole lot compared to when I started five months ago. I’ve been given lots of independence which has made it really rewarding. There’s a community amongst the grads – I’ve made good friendships and there’s a real social aspect too.
What has been the best part of your experience in the IAG Graduate Program?
I’ve really enjoyed the freedom I’ve been given to work independently on a few tasks. It’s been rewarding coming up with an idea that adds value, running with it and presenting back to the team. It gives me the opportunity to share the skills I’ve developed.
Would you recommend the Graduate Program to others? Why?
Absolutely, everyone at IAG is so supportive and want to see you grow. Your input is valued and you get great exposure across the business. The work is really enjoyable with lots of variety and with the independence I’m given, I feel I can leave a legacy behind.
What is the culture like at IAG?
The culture is really friendly and everyone is supportive of your professional development.
You’re valued as a person, and mindfulness and selfcare goes beyond corporate slogans – it exists in the DNA of the company. There is a real respect for work life balance and mental health.Fox Crowley

What advice would you give to a student participating in the Graduate Program?
It’s going to be overwhelming at the start with so much to learn, but if you go in with an open mindset and actively try and learn, you’ll get a lot out of the Grad Program.
Meet Jennifer Ting
What is your university background?
Bachelor of Actuarial Science, Majoring in Finance and Big Data at Bond University.
What areas have you gained experience in during your grad rotation so far?
I'm currently in the actuarial and reserving team. I've gone through my first rotation, which is in workers compensation reserving.I've done tasks in the reserving valuation, also some ad hoc analysis tasks, and helping with the automation of monitoring reports.
I've definitely learned a lot from my experience so far. I've had the opportunity to apply what I learned at university to real life practical problems.
I've learned a lot about different types of actuarial reserving techniques and actuarial concepts and terms. I’ve also built on my corporate presentation skills, by presenting things I’ve worked on to a variety of stakeholders.
How would you describe your experience so far?
I’ve definitely enjoyed my time in the program. The team is very helpful and I’ve got to know the other grads quite well which has been really nice too.
I’m learning a lot of new things, so that satisfies my thirst for knowledge and curiosity, but also the overall environment is really nice and supportive.Jennifer Ting

What has been the best part of your experience in the IAG Graduate Program?
Definitely the valuation because it required me to learn a lot of new things and it was a very hands-on activity. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the other grads.
Would you recommend the Graduate Program to others? Why?
Yes, definitely! There are a lot of learning opportunities, and the culture is very welcoming and friendly.
What is the culture like at IAG?
I think the culture at IAG is very inclusive and welcoming.
What advice would you give to a student participating in the Graduate Program?
I would say never be scared to ask questions, because it's fine to not know things, and that's how you learn. The Grad Program is a great opportunity to absorb all that new knowledge through asking questions.
