New claims data from NRMA Insurance has highlighted the increased risk of home break-ins during the Christmas and New Year holiday period with a 40% spike in theft claims received in summer compared to the rest of the year.
NRMA Insurance received 2,500 home theft claims between December 2023 and November 2024. The claims data revealed that January 2024 was the worst month for home thefts, accounting for 10% of all theft claims.
A NRMA Insurance survey of 3,500 Australians found 46% are planning on travelling for four consecutive days or more over summer, highlighting the increased vulnerability of homes to summer break-ins.
The insurer is urging Australians to take action to protect their homes from intruders when leaving their homes unattended during the holiday period.
NRMA Insurance Executive General Manager Retail Claims Luke Gallagher said: "Our research shows an alarming 12% of Australians have experienced a home burglary.
With many Australians going away on holiday during summer for an extended time, this is when thieves are most likely to strike, so it’s important to be vigilant, plan ahead and take steps to increase your home securityLuke Gallagher

According to the NRMA Insurance research, less than half (46%) of those going away plan to ask someone to keep an eye on their property and only 13% will pause mail and deliveries.
“Overflowing mailboxes, overgrown lawns and empty carports are immediate signs that a home is vacant so it’s worthwhile asking a neighbour or friend to check on your home, help with upkeep and collect deliveries. This is also the time of year when thieves are looking around to steal parcels that are left unattended,” continued Mr Gallagher.
"Deterrence plays a significant role in the prevention of theft, as criminals typically target items that can be quickly taken and resold at a high value. According to our research, only 28% of Australians store valuables are kept outdoors securely. It is essential to always lock your windows and doors, and ensure valuable items, whether inside or outside your home, are stored under lock and key.”
NRMA Insurance claims data shows bicycles are the most stolen item followed by small technology devices such as smartphones and laptops. In addition to bikes, other items that are generally accessible from the back or side of the house are often targeted by thieves such as power tools, hot water systems, and copper piping.
NRMA Insurance recommends taking the following steps to protect your home and contents during the holiday period:
- Keep valuable outdoor items such as bikes and power tools in a secure location.
- If you’re leaving your home for the day or going on holidays, remember to always keep your doors and windows locked.
- Store valuables such as jewellery in a safe when you are travelling.
- Consider movement-activated sensor lights or security cameras to help deter intruders.
- Request your online deliveries to require signature confirmation or arrange click and collect so valuable items are not left unattended and do not give a signal your home is vacant.
- Avoid leaving keys in a hiding space outside your home. Surprisingly, 17% of Australians admit to doing this.
- Leave small items such as mobile phones, keys and wallets away from the front door and out of sight.
