Joining forces with community partners to help in 2022

How we worked with our Australian and New Zealand community partners to support our customers and the community this year

Despite it being a disastrous year for many people, we’re proud to have been able to help our communities and customers get back on their feet by managing and paying claims, and by partnering with organisations to help build community resilience to natural disasters and climate change.

As we round out the year, we reflect on some of the ways we worked with community organisations and partners in Australia and New Zealand to support our customers and the community in 2022.

We would like to thank our people and our community partners for their role in bringing these initiatives to life to help us continue to deliver on our purpose to make your world a safer place.

Resilience Day

We held our inaugural IAG Resilience Day in November, with close to 4,000 employees across Australia and New Zealand getting involved in a range of activities to help build community resilience.

In Australia, this came to life through the NRMA Insurance National Day of Help, while in New Zealand it was the AMI National Day of Care.

In total, we participated in more than 130 activities with our community partners including The Australian Resilience Corps (the Corps), Australian Red Cross, GIVIT, Habitat for Humanity NZ, Conservation Volunteers Australia and Conservation Volunteers New Zealand.

As a result of these activities we:

  • Planted more than 1,200 trees;
  • Picked up nearly 620kg of rubbish; and
  • Cleared the equivalent of 15 Olympic-size swimming pools (18,300m2) of invasive weeds and bushfire fuel loads.

Supported flood-affected communities with $1m NRMA Insurance Help Package

In March we announced a $1 million Help Package, providing critical funding to help communities get back on their feet.

This included:

  • $400,000 to help GIVIT provide immediate items communities were asking for.
  • $300,000 to support Australian Red Cross to help with recovery and prepare for future events.
  • $300,000 to support an additional 2,676 Lifeline tele-health counselling sessions for impacted communities.

Formed a new partnership with SASES to help communities prepare for storms and floods

In June, NRMA Insurance became the first Principal Partner of the South Australian State Emergency Service to help South Australians be better prepared for storms and floods.

Continued our reconciliation journey and partnered with the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation

We launched our fourth Reconciliation Action Plan and partnered with the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation to find new First Nations-led carbon farming projects to help limit the impact of climate change.

Supported the community to build resilience from the ground up with the Corps

As a founding partner of the Corps, NRMA Insurance supported the Corps with its first community-led resilience trial and ‘muster’ event in Wooroloo Western Australia, which involved working with the local community and community organisations to develop a localised resilience plan, as well as participating in an activity to clear high fuel load weeds to prevent future fires.

Gave people the tools to build more resilient homes with the FORTIS House project

As part of the FORTIS House project, we partnered with the Bushfire Building Council of Australia and the Shoalhaven City Council to release free architectural drawings, specifications and handbooks to make it easier and more affordable for Australians to build sustainable houses resilient to bushfires, floods, storms, heatwaves and cyclones.

Helped Habitat for Humanity NZ

Through our AMI partnership with Habitat for Humanity, we launched a volunteer platform to make it easier for our people to across the country to get involved in community projects such as repairing homes.

Launched the NRMA Insurance Carbon Offset Program

The industry-first program allows motor customers to offset the carbon emissions produced by their car each year, to help reduce the impact on the environment.

Helped GIVIT achieve their one million milestone

One year on from NRMA Insurance and RACV jointly donating $2 million to establish GIVIT’s COVID-19 Relief Program, more than one million essential items and services have been provided to communities across Australia impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and compounding natural disasters.
